The Prosodic Characteristics of the Number Words in Hong Kong Cantonese
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper investigates the prosodic characteristics, including the temporal structure, F0, and intensity, of the monosyllabic number words (MNW) and compound number words (CNW), bisyllabic and trisyllabic, in Hong Kong Cantonese. Results of analysis show that (i) the rime durations of all the MNW in isolation are reduced when the MNW occur as component MNW in the CNW; (ii) not all the initial consonants of the component MNW in the CNW are reduced; (iii) the reduction of the rimes and initial consonants for the component MNW varies according to the position in the CNW; (iv) the closure duration in the CNW also varies according to the position in the CNW; (v) the shapes of the F0 contours of the citation tones on the component MNW in the CNW are maintained, though the F0 level is slightly lowered for the MNW in the CNW-final position; and (vi) the intensity level is also slightly lowered for the component MNW in the CNW-final position.

Prosodic Focus in Hong Kong Cantonese without Post-focus Compression
A recent study reported that post-focus compression (PFC) previously found in Beijing Mandarin is absent in two related languages, Taiwanese and Taiwan Mandarin, and that PFC is beneficial to focus recognition. This paper presents the results of acoustic and perception experiments for Hong Kong Cantonese, another Chinese dialect, which show that PFC does not occur in Hong Kong Cantonese, making...

متن کاملThe Prosody of Bisyllabic and Polysyllabic Words in Hong Kong Cantonese
This is a phonetic study of the prosody of bisyllabic and polysyllabic words in Hong Kong Cantonese. The values of the three prosodic properties, duration, F0, and intensity, of the words are determined by the type of tones on the component syllables of words as well as the position of the syllables in the words. The F0 characteristic of the citation tones is maintained, where they are realized...
متن کاملA preliminary study of the temporal relationship between prosody and gesture in Hong Kong Cantonese
Previous studies of speech and gesture in intonational languages generally suggested that prosodic and gestural prominence are aligned with one another, pitch accented/ stressed syllable or the peak fundamental frequency (F0) of it being the prosodic anchor. A logical question to raise would be whether such alignment exists in tonal languages without lexical stress. To answer the question, this...
